Sunflower Hidden Disabilities Program Takes Flight at the Buffalo and Niagara Falls Airports

BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) is proud to announce the launch of the internationally recognized Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program at Buffalo and Niagara Falls International Airports (BUF, IAG). This initiative reaffirms the NFTA’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing a supportive environment for all travelers.
The program, originating in the UK, has gained global recognition for its simple yet powerful approach to accessibility by bringing hidden disabilities into the spotlight. These can include autism, mental health conditions, hearing loss, chronic pain or other non-apparent - disabilities and conditions. Passengers who may need additional assistance while traveling can discreetly signal their needs by wearing a Sunflower lanyard, badge, or wristband.
"By participating in the Sunflower Program, our region's airport is making a commitment to better accommodate passengers with hidden disabilities," said Congressman Tim Kennedy. "I applaud the NFTA and the Buffalo Niagara International Airport for taking this step, which will ensure a smoother, more accessible experience for travelers who need additional support."
“The NFTA is dedicated to making air travel a positive and stress-free experience for all,” said Kim Minkel Executive Director of the NFTA. “Airport staff have been trained to recognize the Sunflower symbol and will provide compassionate assistance ensuring a smooth journey for program participants. Launching the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program at BUF and IAG reflects our dedication to ensure every passenger feels understood, respected, and supported.”

The event will featured remarks from NFTA Leadership and testimonials from individuals and organizations advocating for inclusion.
